A good sign.
« on: January 07, 2008, 11:51:57 AM »
In a recent phone conversation between Sheriff Gee and the PBA the Sheriff stated that after the Decertification votes, he would like to sit down with the Union and try to work things out.  We take this as a positive sign and look forward to the meeting.

When will the voting take place.  Rumor is the LE vote will take place late January/early February.  what about the Detention Sergeants?  Was something sent forward to PERC with regard to them?  If so when and will will we be voting?  Any insight on these questions.  The more info put out the better Steve.  We need to keep our membership informed, especially now.  Thanks

The PBA was notified by the Public Employees Relations Commission that the Sheriff's Office wants to do an on site vote instead of a mail in vote.  The PBA will continue to fight for a mail in vote.  We believe the Sheriff's Office will attempt to intimidate members of the bargaining unit at an on site vote and we want to protect our members from any harassment.  We will let you know as soon as PERC makes a ruling.

We believe the vote will take place in late January or early February.  We are told the voting for Detention Sergeants and Law Enforcement Deputies will take place at the same time.

Stay safe

Rich,
"PBA"  is correct, the vote should be about the same if not the same days as the LEO vote takes place. As soon as I or "PBA" has an answer we will let you know.

Remember this Detention Sgt's. after the first contract that covered the Deputy's and the Cpl's, the HCSO had a few years to fix the Detention Sgt's pay issues, to make it right. What happened? Does your Cpl. make more than you do? Do you have a Deputy that makes more than you? Are there rookie Sgt's that make more than 4 5 or 6 year Sgt?  Did the gap between you and your LT get closer? Or larger? I make more than 2 out of my last three SGT'S. With out the PBA who is going to stand up and push this issue? Do you think the problem will fix it self? Oh, one more thing, the next time you go to the SOC, please look at the photo's on the walls. Tell me how many Detention personnel you see. If you find any please let me know who you saw and where the photo is located. I have not found one yet. This is going to take time people. Do not give up the fight before your first contract. Do not give up your right to fight period.

In a jail cell who is the one who gets picked on? The one who will not fight back, the one who takes it on the chin and says nothing, does not fight back. Do not be that guy

Steve is right, if we don't take a stand now we will not be able to in the future.  I'm one of those six year Sgt's he talks about and he is entirely correct.  My Cpl makes more than me as do all the newly promoted Sgts with 1 year or less grade and up to 5 years less time on the job.  How did the S.O. see this as fair and better yet, how did they think that we wouldn't notice and try to have it corrected.  When brought to their attention they chose to ignore it hoping we would fade away.  We need to stand strong and unified to let them know things need to change and the inequities corrected.

To all Sergeants, remember that the Sheriff had every opportunity to make things right before you guys vote in the Union.  He failed to acknowledge you all and fix the issue.  Then he refused to negotiate in good faith after you all voted in the PBA and entered in to negotiations.  Please don't be fooled in to thinking that if you vote the Union out, that he will take care of you guys and make it all OK.  Hang in there and lets get this done the right way.
