Any words to the masses before the vote?
« on: February 11, 2008, 12:48:57 AM »
Well here we sit on the eve of the start of the decertification vote.  I still wish it would have been an in house vote so this issue could have been settled quickly instead of having to wait around but that point is moot now.  I guess some people get intimidated for one reason or another.  Such is life.

Any last words from either the LEO or the DTN Prez before the LEO side of the house votes?  I've made it no secret that I'm not a PBA member and that I am planning to cast my vote against the union.  I just wanted to say thank you to both chapter presidents for answering questions put to them on this forum.  Wheter I agreed with you or not is not the issue.  You answered the questions that others and I put to you.

That said.  What could you tell me to convince me as well as others to vote for you?  Literally, the forum is yours.  Peace out.

The short and simple issue is to look at what unions do for members.  Unions are here to try and get better benefits and pay, to represent members when they are in trouble and to be the voice of the little guy.
The fight against the Union is all about power.  Corporations and management have never wanted to give up absolute power to unions.
A union provides checks and balances to the system.  It prevents absolute power.  It prevents management’s ability to enforce the rules the way they want to.
Look around the state, and the country for that matter and you will see that the top agencies all have unions.  The system works well when you give it time.
Look at some of the recent accomplishments of the PBA in Florida
The heart lung bill.
The Policemen’s Bill of Rights.
Reformed internal affairs rules.
The drop plan (by the way an 8 year drop plan is in the works).
These are just a few accomplishments.
Locally we started a step plan with our first contract which we were told we would never get.  This will be one of the first things to go away if the union is voted out.  You will also lose your cafeteria benefit.  Without a union your benefits will not be protected.
Think about your future before you vote.

I would like to add a question and a thought.

Some have said that unions have no power in this state, that they are ineffective, if that were the case then why is there such an effort from the office to get rid of the PBA?

Collective Bargaining is your right, you have earned this right, be Patience, work with the union to make it better and stronger. Strong unions were not built in a year or three.
